The alarm rings. It’s half-past seven. Half asleep, I squint at my phone, trying to get my bearings. What day is it? Am I going to the office? And then it hits me: I’m on holiday – and suddenly, I’m wide awake: because today is ski day!
With a widening smile, I toss off the duvet, stumble to the window, and pull the curtains back. A picture-perfect scene awaits – the Dolomite peaks shimmer in the dawn light, and the sky promises to turn a brilliant blue. ‘Perfect conditions’, I think to myself, sending a quick thank-you prayer to the weather goddess. And just then, my rumbling stomach says good morning. A loud growl that sounds like a mix of ‘wild animal in the jungle’ and ‘Harley-Davidson’. ‘Calm down,’ I think, ’we're about to get started.’ But my stomach won't rest and sends me a clear message: ‘You may think you're a hero, but you won't make a metre without breakfast!’ And he's right. You can't start an adventure without a solid foundation - and I don't want to miss out on the breakfast here at the Hotel Alpenblick ...
And finally the time comes. Ski suit? Check. Skis? Check. Ski pass? At the ready. Annoying look for parking or endless queues at the ski lift? Not a chance! How good that Hotel Alpenblick delivers on its promise: ski-in, ski-out, right from the door. The Bruggerleite lift takes me straight to the base of the Helm ski area – quick, easy, and stress-free. The best part? A brand-new slope even brings you directly back to the lift. It’s amazing how much time you save when you’re not battling crowds or squeezing onto a packed ski bus.
The Tre Cime Dolomites ski area awaits, and I’m more than ready. Only last night, our host Manuela shared all her insider tips. The best slopes? Practically every one, but she gave me a few personal favourites (top secret, as you would imagine). Where is the perfect spot for a morning aperitivo with panoramic views? Check! And the tastiest spots for lunch, where there is a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds? Check! I even know about the new lift and hidden sun-soaked corners of the slopes. With this plan and a dose of excitement, I glide into the day, ready to conquer the perfectly groomed ski slopes. The snow crunches underfoot, and I know: today will be amazing.
The Helmjet lift whisks me comfortably to the top of Helm. I’ll admit it: I’m one of those people who enjoys the lift rides almost as much as the skiing. That serene gliding feeling as the landscape unfolds below – how wonderful! And the views of the snowy mountain world never fail to take my breath away. When the locals in the gondola say it’s “richtig bärig” (fantastic), I know we are of one mind.
At the top, I take a deep breath. A brief moment to enjoy the seemingly endless view of the peaks and then I take a look at the piste map. My goal for the day? The Jägerhütte – the aperitivo hotspot. I take piste 13, the Helm/Vierschach valley run, which leads me straight there. At the hut, I get a warm welcome. The sun is shining, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sweet treats fills the air, and I quickly find a seat with a view. Now, the only dilemma: should I go for a sparkling Hugo, a heavenly creamy Bombardino, or a strong cappuccino? A decision I’m happy to linger over – after all, the anticipation is part of the pleasure.
After a few relaxed descents on easy and medium-difficulty slopes - to get me in the groove - a familiar feeling comes back: hunger. A glance at the clock confirms it. Just after 12. I would say it is lunchtime!
So off we go to Manuela's next recommendation: the Hahnspielhütte. The Hasenköpfl chairlift takes me comfortably up to the top, and from there I'm only a short descent - less than a minute from my destination. The hut is idyllically located on the southern slope of the Helm and spoils its guests not only with delicious food, but also with a sensational view of the Sesto mountain sundial. On the way I am warmly welcomed by the owner of the hut Karl, who asks me with a broad grin: "So, are you hungry?" I nod and have to laugh - he must know the sight of a hungry skier. Before I know it, I’m seated at a rustic wooden table. To my right, cheerful Italians natter; to my left, Germans animatedly discuss the day’s best pistes. It’s one of those moments when you realise: on the mountain, everyone is equal – united by a love of skiing, good food, and these breathtaking views.
Over the 12 and 11 runs, I make my way down to the Stiergarten lift, which takes me up to 2,100 metres. The view here is spectacular – the Dolomites in all their glory. No wonder this spot is home to the photo hotspot Tre Cime view. A quick look, a snapshot and I'm off again.
From there, I glide down to the Bad Moos valley station. Time for a short break! The Luis Alm is just the right place for an afternoon snack - and my gaze immediately hovers over a sweet chocolate tartlet that literally smiles back at me. Resistance? Futile. That hits the spot. Refuelled and ready to go, I return to Hotel Alpenblick. Here, my après-ski programme awaits: a relaxing sauna session to ease the muscles, followed by a chilled drink at the bar. As I take one last look at the snowy peaks, I let the perfect ski day come to an end. This is what a perfect ski day feels like – joy from start to finish.
P.S.: what is my next adventure? I don´t have to wait very long. Maybe even tomorrow. Manuela mentioned the “Giro delle Cime” – a spectacular ski tour into Val Comelico. Packed as you would imagine with her insider tips. But I'll tell you more about that another time... or you can just experience it for yourself. The Hotel Alpenblick is not only the perfect starting point, you'll also get the best tips straight from the pros. Who knows - maybe we'll see each other on the slopes!
